Windows 7 Registry Keys Missing?

I am trying to modify some keys in my registry. I'm using Windows 7 and there appears to be some sort of safety feature on as I cannot see any of the keys. Each folder I visit has only one key labeled default but no other keys which to my knowledge isn't normal. I have tried changing permissions and searching google to no avail. If anyone here uses Windows 7 and has and information regarding this matter please help my out by posting a reply. Thanks in advance.
