It is claimed that the following things need to be done to the computer, on a regular basis. If these things are not performed, the computer is liable to slow down and malfunction. I found this information on the Internet.
It is necessary to remove the following items regularly:
1. Remove Corrupted Files, Internet Temporary Files, Cookies, Cache Files, URL and Download Histories. Windows Temporary Files and Log Files, Unused and old entries, including File Extensions, ActiveX Controls, Class IDs, Pog IDs, Shared DLLs, Application Paths, Icons and Invalid Short cuts, Unused Applications, Unused Windows Components, Unused User Accounts and Old Restore Points.
Remove Temporary Files and Recent File Lists (MRUs) from many applications including Media Player, Google Toolbar, Netscape, MS Office, Nero, Adobe Acrobat, WinAce, WinZip etc.
2. Remove some programs that launch by default, when windows start up.
3. De-fragmentation and cleaning Registry Keys.
How much of this is true?

true. windows does not clean itself so you end up with a lot of garbage in it. did 1 custumer's computer using just Ccleaner which ended up cleaning 10gigs of crap out of windows.

I've just got rid of McAfee and got Microsoft Security Essentials and Ccleaner.
Seems better so far.
I'm not good with pc's so I just try to pick up info off forums.

Ta ddp. I watch live streams of English football.
You can easily pick up viruses/trojans etc from these sites.
Is there anything else you'd recommend to protect my pc?
Malwarebytes, adblock etc. Thanks :)

ccleaner is a great cleaning tool quick work well have bean useing it for years

i run avg free, spybot & malware bytes so what 1 misses the other(s) pickup. same as i run ccleaner, easy cleaner & free windows registry repair, what 1 misses the others pickup.

avg is running in the background. the new spybot i think runs in the background as the beta version did. ccleaner runs only at startup of windows or when you manually run it. the others are manually run.

Last time I used it, SpyBot had a service that runs in the background called TeaTimer for real-time protection, but it can be disabled in the options menu.

im curious about the defrag.i have never done a defrag and would like to hear what effect it will have on the computer or what effect it will have if you dont run one.I have tryed to run 1 on my mums old computer but it crashed when it was running.
custom built gaming pc from early 2010,ps2 with 15 games all original,ps3 500gbs with 5 games all original,yamaha amp and 5.1channel surround sound speakers,46inch sony lcd smart tv.

When you open and re-save files, the data that makes up your files becomes fragmented between different 'blocks' on the HDD. E.g (1,2,3,4 & 5 begin different files).
1|1|2|3|4|5|1|
De-fragmenting your HDD re-arranges the 'blocks' so that they are all located together which overall keeps things healthy and performing as it should be.
1|2|3|4|5
That is a rather basic example. If you are remembering to defrag your HDD every once in a while then that is often enough. You don't defrag SSDs, and doing so could potentially be detrimental to the health of the drive. It probably locked up on your mum's old computer because it was rather seriously fragmented and the PC didn't have the resources to deal with it.

SUPERAntiSpyware works a lot better that Spybot AntiSpyware. SUPERAntiSpyware doesn't keep you from running your other programs like some of the other antispyware programs.Spybot will give you to many false positives.Avast antivirus works a lot better than most of the other ones.I deleted the one I was paying for and installed Avast on my computer. I have never had anymore viruses on my computer since then.

i used to defrag regularly with windows xp,but ive noticed win 7 doesnt need it near as much.i would use superantispyware over spybot as well.spybot used to be the one to use but there are plenty of better programs out there today.
