I have been trying to install my router. The last time I wrote I had got to the point where I was supposed to enter info in a screen. Because I couldn't get access to the internet while connected to the router I removed all the cables so that I was once again connected solely by the modem. This morning I started from scratch, pluging in the cables as per the router's instructions. I now find that the ethernet connection between the modem and the WAN socket of the router is not working (the ethernet light on the modem is not illuminated and neither is the WAN light on the modem. Perhaps my ancient ethernet cable is defunct?

It wasn't your accent that got you it was the time differential.. LOL
Hell I thought you were in Oklahoma.. :)
I really don't have any advice because I can't see or feel anything that far off.
Were you able to talk to NetComm?
You won't get a light on the ethernet port until the router is connected to the modem..
I guess it could be the cable but hook it all up as it should go and try the internet. It should connect to your ISP and set up most of it auto. The screen part is just to set up passwords and security.
Where is ddp when you need him? He works with those things, I think...

i'm here as was doing some photo editing for a friend.
Kafka, turn off the computer, the router& the modem. disconnect coax cable or dsl cable from modem. connect the ethernet cable from the computer to the lan port of the router. connect another ethernet cable from the router's wan port to the ethernet port of the modem. reconnect the modem & router's power cables. reconnect the coax cable or dsl cable to the modem. restart the computer. might have to wait a couple of minutes til both the modem & router finish their diagnostics before you are connected.

If i'm reading it correctly you have worse speed than we do ddp & your on cable. At the moment i'm on adsl 2,avergae speed for a download is 300kbps using a browser & depending on the web site it can go up or down 200.
Using utorrent it can only get as high as 1.2mbps which is what your getting now ????,if i was closer to an exchange it would be even faster some apparently get 5mbps on Adsl 2 unless that's 1 mega byte your on,makes me wonder what so called ultra fast broad band is like or whatever that's supposed to mean,it's being rolled out across the country as we speak, however we have long way to go to catchup to the asian block countries
our speeds are directly related to distance from exchange,so prices are flat rate across the board & i assume are based on data requirement includes landline monthly charge for normal phone calls
nz bb packges for adsl 2

edit: i have the 500gb cap,i need it i can use that up in less than a week *sheepish grin*

I was about to contact NetComm when I thought I would try one more thing. My modem has four Ethernet ports. Up to now I had attempted to connect to the router using two of them to the router. After following ddp's advice I plugged the cable into a third port and all the relevant lights lit up! What excitement. I can now access the internet via the router. My next step is to set up the security (firewall) as I can still see my ip address via 2oldGeek's link.
A couple of hours later: I have been following the manual but still haven't managed to conceal my IP address. The manual seems to assume that I know what it's talking about. For example, under Firewall which , I am told, allows me to setup MAC, IP and port filtering rules I am give two settings under Basic Settings 1) MAC/IP/Port Filtering (Enable/Disable) and 2) Default Policy (Dropped/Accepted. There are even more choices under MAC/IP/Port Filtering Settings. Unfortunately I don't know which option to select.
I have encountered the same general problem with Security. Is there a website you can recommend which gives me some clues as to how to set it all up?

Thanks. I am having trouble opening PDF documents, all I get is a blank tab. Perhaps I uninstalled something I shouldn't have. I am presently reinstalling the Adobe Reader. In the meantime, I am still finding that Avast is switched off. I have tried turning it on via Action Centre but without success. Previously I was able to turn it on but it would switch itself off without warning.

Do not use Adobe Reader. Uninstall it and download and install -> SumatraPDF
It?s easier and Safer to use.

I have Firefox set to always ask me where to save downloads and that link opens windows explorer for me to choose.
Is your router working as far as getting the internet ok? And is my little hacker sign still showing your real IP address?
p.s. that link does open a blank screen. Have you looked in your downloads folder to see if it went in there? it don't take it long to download for me, just a few seconds..

I am really concerned about your AV turning off.. You may have a rootkit that I can't see from the logs I have and most of the programs that I normally use are not compatable with Win 8, yet...
I'm looking and hopefully can come up with something that we can use.
You were very unprotected and were downloading a ton of stuff that is known to bring in malware...
Let us know if you get any Joy out of that router...

I have managed to set up the router so that I can get the internet through it. I have also set up the Wifi successfully, however I am still bamboozled by the router's security settings and firewall. I don't know which of the options to select (and their are quite a few). I plan to get help from NetComm's support line on Monday (It only operates during business hours). I managed to read the manual but still don't understand the options.
Regarding the AV, it's a bit of a mystery to me. Windows 8 Action Centre tells me that both Defender and Avast are switched off and won't let me turn either one one. Avast itself tells me that my computer is secured and all shields are active.

You are OK! I'm sorry, my sometimers is kicking in... Windows will not monitor the new Avast but it's on if you got the Avast icon in your tray. It's telling you it's on so don't pay attention to Action Center...
Sorry I forgot that....
p.s. leave your defender off....

To check your router firewall:
Turn your Windows Firewall off, then go to this is a link to "Shields up". https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 This will scan your firewall, and tell you if you're vulnerable or not. All ports should come up as "stealth". If all ports come up as stealth, your firewall is fine. Click proceed in the center of the homepage. then on the next page, click on "All Service Ports". That will start the scan.
They should all come up ?Green?= Stealth. Also click the big orange button to check your routers security..

I scanned my firewall on ShieldsUp and was told that "The equipment at the target IP adress did not respond to our UPnP Probes (I think it said probes)"
I checked the ports and they all showed in green (stealth). None were open and a couple were closed. although Unsolicited Packets and Ping Echo passed, Solicited TCP Packets failed.
I ran WhatIsMyIPAddress and found that it still shows my IP address and IP, though it did not detect any services. I am not sure what this means.

This is good I hope they can answer some questions and help you set it up..

That?s good, sounds like the router may have a Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) Firewall. I always look for that in a router before buying.

Closed ports don?t show green, only stealth ports do.
Here is what I found with google for TCP Packets failed:
?I have a D-LINK Wireless Router. After checking the firewall settings on my router, I found that one of the settings was not shutting down the ports (only addresses), changed the setting and got a full GREEN (Stealth) from Shields Up!?
May be in the settings.. Hope they can get you setup when you call.

Don?t know but think it means your ISP internet service provider and you should NOT be seeing your real IP address?
Let us know how the call works out?

I contacted NetComm Live Support and they assured me that the default settings for the firewall and security were fine. I told them that I could still see my IP address on whatismy IPAddress. I asked whether the firewall should stop that site seeing my IP address and they replied "No, actually what the site is showing is your public IP address that has been assigned to you by your ISP. If you don't have it you can't browse the internet." I then asked whether that meant that hackers can't access my account even if they can see my IP address. They replied (and the grammar is theirs) "Everyone should have their public IP address if they are browsing the internet. What the hackers will do, usually they will scan the ports that are opened at our side, if they found any opened port they might intrude it, that's why many hackers spread trojans and viruses attached to a downloadable program to create a backdoor so they can access the opened port, but if you don't download any suspicious programs such as crack, keygen, etc. there's nothing you should be worried about".
Does this make sense? I thought that having a firewall meant that I wouldn't be able to download suspicious programs.
