DS Lite will not power on.

I have a "refurbished" DS lite that my wife purchased for me and mailed to me in my deployed location. Upon receiving the DS lite, I had issues finding a place to charge it due the use of european power infrastructure. Now, I have found a place to charge it and it's plugged in and the amber colored light comes on. When I opened the system and pushed the power switch the system did not turn on, but the amber instead switched off. So I removed the charger and put it back into the system and the amber light returned. I removed the DS from power and again tried to power it on and again it did not power up. Anybody have this issue and know how to fix it?
