NDS R4 - wrong update version?

My friend is one of the plenty who has come across the loading screen problem; the loading screen doesn't progress to the menu, it just stays there.
My guess is that the R4 update that he installed wasn't the one that his R4 is compatible with. He downloaded from the original R4 website, r4ds . com
However, I've tried all version on it and it's still not working.
The main issue is that he's forgotten where exactly he bought it from, so that's why I'm assuming the problem might be stemming from a wrong update version.
I've heard that some fakes have different kinds of markings under the sticker, so perhaps some images may help.

There's a white dot kind of thing in the middle and on the bottom of it at the back a screw is directly under it.
