R4 Update for a tech dummy

It has been a few years since I used by R4. Last time I used it the files were labeled as .nds. Just this morning I tried to DL a file and it was labeled .nd5 How should go about updating my software so I can play this game. For the record, I did try putting this nd5 file on my R4 and it didn't show up as playable.
