R4I-GOLD Upgrade freezes

Ok I have the R4I-GOLD Upgrade Revolution for DS....I got the kernel from the website on the box (www.R4I-GOLD.COM)= R4i V1.30b kernel

I've followed the instructions found here - formatted my MicroSD card w/SD Formatter, then ran format through Windows - extracted the rar files directly to the sd card - got the card to load up the ds lite - then went back to pc to load a known good rom/game. The DS loads up fine but when I click on a game it says "Create save file" and totally freezes there (I've left it for 5 minutes). Tried another game rom and they both freeze while creating the save file.

I have switched MicroSD cards - tried another R4I-GOLD card (I bought 2 at the same time) - used two different SD readers - so I don't think that it's a hardware issue.

Do you have ANY idea how to fix this? (This is suppose to be a birthday surprise for my young nephew.) Thanks in advance for any help.
