recently I received a notice from Comcast saying about a downloaded movie from a bit torrent and that that they are watching my downloads. I have never had this with verizon and need to know what I need to block comcast from monitoring my downloads from torrents. Any suggestions. thanks

if any isp wants to see your downloads they can.this was probably as a result of a complaint from a copyright holder of the movie you downloaded.

i was thinking of using a web proxie or a VPN. lately someone told me about beethink. thanks for the idea. it was a movie

You probably want to stop torrents all together and move to newsgroups or some other format where you pay to download and you don't upload. Pick one that will provide a secure protocol. Otherwise you will get caught and not just get a letter. Hackers for hire are paid to hunt down torrents for a particular movie or game. They will download the movie repeatedly, logging all the IP addresses of those that sent them info. That is enough to take you to court or have pay 3 grand for each infraction.

Comcast doesn't just send out letters. They were told to contact you by the media watch groups. There are probably 50 or more 'spiders' that hunt torrent nets or webs for users. They log each IP address a user sends info to then does the same for each of those connections.

As the torrent users leave the hunters can look for smaller quarry. You might avoid detection by using a blocker and only download once every other month but you are on their black list now. The blockers only prevent the hunters from seeing your total uploads and total down loads which are publicly viewable so torrent trackers can prioritize what you get. The hunters know your address and will probably check it regularly with a direct ping meaning they don't have to hunt you because they know where you are. Even if you are blocking them they will know you are up and running and will catch you because that is their job. The same would have happened if you were on Verizon. Torrents have not been 'safe' for years. You must be a small fish to have lasted so long.

Let me explain what happened to me and how i got back at comcast see i am a developer and when apple launched mac os x leopard beta i needed to use a torrent to download it because apples own download site was down due to overload of users downloading it well i downloaded it installed it and i got a letter telling me i was in violation from apple computers inc and needed to stop using the software effective immediately well i wrote them back explaining hey i was a developer and apples download site was down so i had to download the beta another way and told them to basically go $#$% themselves they sent not 1 truck not two trucks but 3 trucks i watched them monitoring my connection from the poll across the street from me and two morons on laptops jacking into my network which of course i had protected with a firewall that distributes a virus that wipes lan cards firmware off of there machines if they try to gain entry.

Well comcast decided to try to get me for damage of property and assault but i won and you wonder how i won i recorded everything i did and what they did i had my video evidence that showed me downloading the torrent and using the torrent because apples site was down and even better i had on video them jacking into my network and the printout from my firewall and them trying to gain illegal entry into my network on video.

Guess what they where busted for.

If the files you are downloading are in un-encrypted then your out of luck anyone can see what your downloading,best bet go wireless & leech off a neighbor just don't get caught
