some help with video capture quality tools plz

im capturing video from a digital box using a HDfury2 and Hd Video Recorder Hauppage
the problem with this is it only captures in .TS and finding it hard to do anything after with this file type, the inbuilt MP4 converter just dosent seem to work,

so the easyst way ive found to do this is to use fraps to capture the video from the hauppauge with saves as an AVI with no noticeable quality loss the only problem is the file size ends up massive,
so i then use virtualdub to compress and save as xvid which reduces the size considerably.

what id like to know is am i loosing a lot of quality doing it this way? sound quality is just as important as picture

is there a better way of doing this resulting in good a quality with low file size balance?
