Avatar BD rip playing issues

So I ripped my Avatar Blu-ray disc to mkv format and my computer WinXp sp3 Pentium D processor 3.0ghz 2 gb ram and Geforce 9800gt GPU skips while playing the file. I am using the latest version of VLC to play downloaded yesterday 9/27/10. The codec to play the mkv is h264 and I have a native h264 codec besides whatever VLC uses. Anybody have an ideas why this content skips while playing. The computers specs seem sufficient to play this media.
