After reading through many of the threads here at Afterdawn on the meticulous processes involved in making a BLU-RAY (movie only) portion of an original store bought BLU-RAY disc fit on a 25GB BD-R SINGLE LAYER DISC. I've decided to from now on to only use blank 50GB BD-R DUAL LAYER. I've seen 1st hand the so-far effects of compressing BLU-RAY to BD-R 25GB, and the end result is far less than stellar. Converting BLU-RAY to MKV using any software takes an unbelievable amount of time (though understandable 50GB DLis massive compared to the 8.5GB DL SD media). I've purchased online advertised BLU-RAY/HD software claiming to have streamlined the BLU-RAY back up process only to learn that many are full of sh*t. The back up times using these paid software's are as I've mentioned extremely long like that of currently available free BLU-RAY back-up software. One of these paid software's is the popular SoThink HD Movie Maker. This software I think means well but and estimated 20hrs to convert BLU-RAY (movie only) m2ts file to mkv? Huh?

The movie studios and BLU-RAY industries are smart the average BLU-RAY movie only back up is anywhere from 26GB to 34GB thus you are going to work and wait if you choose to use the much available 25 GB BD-R blank media to back up BLU-RAY, while access to 50GB dual layer changes everything including back-up times to your blank media. I also get the entire movie uncompressed in full HD. I am now waiting for the delivery of my 1st 50GB BD-R DL layer disc. I bought 10 SONY BD-R 50GB dual layer for $96.00 before shipping. Imported from JAPAN.
Yeah that's about 46% Less than the the current common and retail price of $40 to $60.00 a disc. Gotta start somewhere, they'll get cheaper real soon. (I hope).

I've used both ANYDVD HD and DVDFAB 6.0.6.0 BLU-RAY and DVDFAB currently has the edge as they decrypt and burn in one software (compression is a coming soon option). No knock to the many forum members here and elsewhere who are involved in the R&D testing methods and software needed to back up BLU-RAY at any capacity. It's my own reflection after getting a BLU-RAY burner. Then doing more to learn and then trying out the many steps and software available that I see that I and everyone else interested in BLU-RAY back-ups are very much on the ground floor. As SD DVD is still the DVD nedia choice for most. BLU-RAY is SONY and Hollywoods baby and he or she who seeks BLU-RAY back-ups as there recreational hobby will have to be patient.;)
