I have an HD movie that is a .mkv file in x264 format.

My HDTV only supports

Divx 3.11/4.x/5.1/6.0
xViD
H.264 BP/MP/HP
MPEG4 SP/ASP
Motion JPEG

How can I play this file on my TV? I'll need a program to convert it, I assume.

As far as I understand X264 is not a format.X264 is an encoder for creating H264 files. I think your problem is not the video format, but rather the container (MKV). Try muxing to something else (.TS Maybe).

What program could I use? And would that result in a decrease of quality?

TSmuxer. Make sure to get the FPS right or your audio and video will lose sync. The Process is lossless as there is no re-encoding involved. The file resulting size should be very similar to the original.

The moment I imported, it told me some tracks are not supported. Then it ended at 28%.

What are the audio and video codecs being used in your MKV?
