I have pretty well settled on the idea of archiving both blu-ray and dvd as mkv. I have been using Handbrake to make my dvd into a 480 mkv using a constant quality of 16. For blu-ray I have been using Clown DB to make a main title ts file and then using Handbrake to make a 1080p mkv using a constant quality of 22. Somewhere I read that converting the blu-ray to 720p resulted in bitrate benefits that actually resulted in better looking compressed mkv files. I also read somewhere that the dvd files can be upscale to 720p for better looking compressed mkv. In another old thread I saw where HD audio was maintained with mkv by first making mkv without any audio and then running it back through tsmuxer with the video of the original file unchecked. I am assuming the mkv and the original ts file are both added and then joined to add the original audio to the mkv file. Does anyone know of a good detailed guide or threads that explain in detail how to go about this?
