Hello, wondering what the best way is to handle my Blu ray backups that have hd.cfm" class="forum_link" target="_blank">DTS-HD audio. I am streaming to a PS3 so I have to convert. My reciever is only Dolby Digital, so I dont need HD audio (I dont think). Have been happy with 5.1 AC3 audio so far.
I had read that the Stream Extractor in MeGUI could handle converting DTS-HD to whatever, but I only get an error. Currently I am using tsMuxer to strip the DTS-HD to just DTS, then using MeGUI audio encoder to AC3 using FFMPEG. Seems like alot of steps, and I'm worried I may be reducing quality alot. DTSbitrate is 1500ish, max AC3 is only 640.
Any info on the best way to handle this is appreciated.
Many steaming programs can convert the audio on-the-fly to the formats that are supported by the player. I know both TVersity and PS3 Media Server can both convert the audio from various formats to AC-3.
One problem with keeping DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD is that they are lossless formats (the awesome part). The not so awesome part is that they have bit rates up to 5 Mbits/sec, making them huge. WHen they make mkv files they don't want them to take up infinite space, so keeping the lossless audio is out of the question. DTS at 1,510 kbps (the core of DTS-HD MA) is still better quality than AC-3 at 640 kbps and unless you are a hard core audiophile then you are getting a good compression to quality ratio. Also, the audio isn't larger than the video.

So allowing the audio transcode to AC-3 at 640 kbps isn't too bad, its either that or Stereo PCM, which I'm asumming is also supported by your device.
