Hi there. I had to re-register, but I used to post a reasonable amount about DVD Shrink. I came back because I have a friend desperately trying to convince me that a 240hz LCD + blu ray player needs a $100 cable with a 15gb transfer rate.

I know this is wrong. Everything I've read about this is wrong, but I can't find specifics to back it up. Is there a situation where one would need better than a 1.3 hdmi cable outside of setting up a massive digital theater? It seems like he's putting up figures he knows I don't understand just to defend his position, but if he's right I'd like to be able to make the correct decision. Thanks!

It's apples and oranges. 240Hz in a number that only applies INTERNAL to the TV. It is the scan rate at which the TV refreshes and has NOTHING to do with the external signal input. 240Hz TVs quadruple the video frame rate by inserting three entirely new frames for each original frame. This is done inside the TV and has NOTHING to do with the input signal.

The external signal input rate and required cable are only applicable to the devices which are outputting (providing input) to the TV and are directly related to the signal resolution.

The specification for uncompressed 1080p video is about 3+gb/s. Your friend mught be simply quadrupling the data rate to get 15gb/s.

The flaw in that thinking is that the output device (blu-ray player) has NO IDEA what kind of TV it is connected and does not have the capability (or requirement) to increase the data rate based on the refresh rate of the TV.

That's how I understand it, divergent views/corrections are appreciated.
