so i previously had a custom firmware. after realizing i couldnt play newer games, i decided to try to get rid of it. so i flashed my PSP. after flashing, it instructs me that in order to start i must update the system software.
in my memory stick a file now appears that sais PSP Update Ver X.YZ
when i click this (assuming that this is the software update)a white PSP screen appears and then a message saying The game could not be started (80020001).
so thats problem one.
next i tried an update version that came with resistance retribution which was 5.03.
black screen appears for about 20 seconds then a message saying "the system configuration of this PSP system does not appear to be correct. the update cannot be completed. contact tech support (DRNFFFFFFD7)"

so i guess these problems are somehow linked and the main problem is me having to update the system software. is the X.YZ version update a software update?

EDIT:
i called tech support. he told me that is i do a system update it should fix both problems. so i downloaded the 6.20 update put it in PSP/GAME/UPDATE and renamed it EBOOT.PBP. but when i transfer i go to the memory stick on the PSP it comes out as a corrupt data file.
