hey
iam somewhat clear with the terminology of firmwares.. but i have no idea on how to proceed further. I have a psp-1000 with official firmware 6.39. I learnt that custom firmware is highly recommended for all psp users, but iam still confused on how to handle these firmwares.
how should i install a CFW on my psp having a OFW 6.39?
what should i do so that i can play iso or cso game files on my psp ?
i would be very happy if u can reply in detail ..please

Upgrade to 6.60 either through the internet or offline (you can get the update on the official website, I'd recommend downloading it, because you still need it later).
Then get either 6.60 PRO-B or 6.60 LCFW ME from psp.dashhacks.com (in the download section). Install that. You are now on a non-permanent custom firmware.
Your PSP 1000 supports permanent custom firmware (if it realy is a 1000 or PHAT and not an E1000, which is the latest model). So also download 6.60 ME-9 (or whatever the latest is) from the dashhacks website I gave you. Just follow the readme file that comes with the download and you're all set.
When you have installed everything, activate your PSP and in XMB press select. Then change the UMDISOdriver to one you want.
Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

thanks now i downloaded the 6.60 LCFW ME v1.8 as you told. i didn't run it though, what is the second thing you told about 6.60 ME-9. I couldn't find it anywhere. Iam a newbie :|

XMB is the cross media bar, the home screen of the PSP.
LCFW is a signed non-permanent firmware that runs on official firmware, meaning you don't have to downgrade or anything, it allows you to play homebrew and everything else. But every time you switch off your PSP it reverts back to original official firmware.
6.60 MEv1.8 (I thought 1.9 was already out) is a permament firmware, that also allows you to run homebrew and backups and every thing else, it doesn't revert back to official firmware and so on, but you can't start it from official firmware. Therefore you need to start the LCFW to install the CFW.
The thing about the UMDISO MODE is something people tend to forget, you need this to start a game without an UMD in the drive.
