Hi all,

Ive had my amd athlon x2 4000+ cpu based PC for five years now and think im due for an upgrade, even though it runs well with a few hiccups here and there.

I need advice on purchasing a new CPU, MOBO, memory. I have already bought a AMD Radeon 6850 graphics card. Keep in mind i dont use my PC for gaming but am going to start.

I want a PC that is fast at normal everyday tasks (web, streaming video, winrar, general PC use), aswell as output to my 42" HD TV @ 1080p.

I was thinking about making an AMD FX-8150 based PC with 8 GIG of RAM. But I keep hearing 'most apps are single threaded so theres no point having all those cores', and other people saying 'Intel are better at single core stuff' etc.

I can get a FX-8150, decent mobo and 8gig ram for about £270. I dont mind spending slightly more if its worth it.

Keep in mind the PC I make will be kept for another five years or so, should I go for better single core cpu or future proof and go for more cores.

Cheers all.

intel i5 2500 - £170
intel i7 2600k - £235
intel i7 3820 - £227
where do i get more bang for buck for every day general use, which for games games and which for future stuff?

Have a look on here.

Edit: Personally, I will always choose Intel.

According to that chart the FX-8150 is quite a bit better then the i5 but in real world senarios the results are much closer from other benches, so i dont really know how acurate it is. Judging by that chart I get better bang for buck with the FX-8150. I'm even more confused now.

Well yes, benchmarks are only a guide and real-world scenarios/mileage will vary. Sorry if it's confused things.

If you are thinking about "future proofing", you would ideally buy an Ivy Bridge (3rd gen) i7 as that's the latest version currently.

i5 is sufficient for every day, but if you're looking forward and thinking about proper gaming then you'll probably want to consider an i7.

ok. I may go for the cheaper i5 3570 3.5ghz - £165 or is it worth the extra for the i7 3770 3.4ghz - £227 or i7 3770K 3.5ghz -£256? If anyone can provide an example of the benefits of the i7 I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

ps - now im tempted to get the i7 3770, i just cant make my mind up

ps - nope another forum, forum member has recommended i stick to the i5 - 3570k as i7 is overkill for my needs.

So just need advice on a motherboard now. Any ivy bridge one I may dabble in overclocking too, So which mobo can anyone recommend?

If you encode video a lot, the AMD is possibly worth it. If you just want an all-round fast PC, go Intel. I would recommend an i5 3570K for the majority of cases.

Intel or AMD well i have always used AMD due to price myself. However i'm due a upgrade myself and if my budget allows i will go intel i7 3770 3.4ghz as it is just well above any current AMD.
