Can someone offer me suggestions for a budget build? I am looking to get in under $500. My current 7 year old computer has 1.6mhz processer, 1/2 gig of ram and a 32 MB video card. I have to say this computer does everything I want it to do, just very slow. It is mostly an internet computer, downloading files, a little bit of video work to put on facebook etc. I also play the mame games and snes emulators and would like to play older games online like halo or the old COD.
I have a monitor and a new harddrive.
Can someone suggest a budget build that gets me in under $500.

a good fast and inexpensive cpu will be the amd x2 (I have the x2 4800 in my gaming computer, but they go all the way up to x2 6000). You can find good deals on the cpu/mb combo in the 100.00 range.
You don't need more than 2gb of ram unless you have vista then don't buy more than 4gb.
For video card, use the radeon hd4670 (cost 80.00) I own this card and it plays every game I throw at it, this card is also capable of playing all the latest games (at low settings).
You don't need a large power supply, a 400 watt supply will run the cpu/video card and several hard drives with power to spare. I use the "works" brand 400 watt power supply on all my computers, very reliable power supply (cost under 50.00).

The mobo is designed for mini PCs, and secondly its ASUS.
See if you cant pick up a Gigabyte mobo for about $80 in ATX form.

for $500 or under, you can pretty much get a phenom II setup. Also, 1.6mhz is pretty slow.

You need DDR2 Memory. Stick with G.Skill,Corsair,or Patriot.

Everything lookks good. The ram is compatably and you should not have any problems. For $140 you can get a phenom II x4 at 2.8ghz. It would be a good choice over the other cpu.

400w will be plenty for this computer. You will be able to add as many hard drives as power connectors on the psu and still have enough power.

The II x4 is a quad core, the II x2 is a dual core, so you should see a bg performance difference in the two. Although I would probably go with an Intel Core 2 Quad Core set up. The Phenom II x4 isnt a bad chip, the Intel is just a better chip.

Look on pages 26 and 27 of your motherboard manual.

Good, call. That was the exact page of the manual.
I still cant figure out where the HDA, or the AC'97 conncetion go. what does HDA stand for? where does this connection go?
There is a ATX 12v input on my mobo. The only connection from my psu that would fit it is two pieces. But that must be the correct connection correct?

HDA = high def audio. That is better then AC 97 correct? I found the audio pin on the mobo. disregard my last question.
new questions
1. there is 8 pins on my sata HD that is not being used. I have pluged in the sata connecter to the mobo and a power supply. is the vacent 8 pin connection correct?
2. I dont have to set up a HD raid array correct? should I set one up?

The extra 8 pins are not used in most cases. Leave them alone.
No, you don't need to set-up a RAID array.

almost done with the questions.

If I put my old school ide HD in my new computer from my old computer do I need to worry about jumper settings, slave master etc?
hopefully I will be able to load windows 7 tonight.

See page 22 of your motherboard manual. The pair of 2x2 12V power supply plugs connect side-by-side into the 2x4 12V power connector on your motherboard.
Your IDE drive should be set to Master. See http://freepctech.com/pc/001/installing_ide_devices.shtml for more information on IDE settings.
It sounds like you're getting close. You may need to re-partition and format the HDD, but the Windows 7 install process should lead you through those steps.
