Hello, I would like to try my first overclock, but am having some difficulties. I am using a E6750 CPU, XFX 650i Ultra MOBO and 4x 1GB 6400C5DHX RAM. I have read alot of articles on overclocking but there are specific motherboard settings that confuse me.
My aim is overclock as high as possible with 3 years of stable use. I am unsure how high I should increase certain voltages - CPU Core, CPU FSB and nForce SPP (I don't even know what the last one is for) - without cutting usage below 3 years and I am unsure whether changing the HT multiplier affects my overclock. All I can do whilst messing around is unlink the FSB from the memory and change it from 333 to 375, which gets me up to a stable 3GHz. But what I would like to know is what proceedures should I take to push the CPU and memory, and what voltages should I go up to regarding the three mentioned earlier.
Thanks for any help. Just to mention I have read many articles already and can't find the specific answers to my questions. Lloyd
I'd warn against trying to overclock very far with this setup for two reasons:
1. You have 4 sticks of RAM installed - this harms overclocking performance significantly with Core 2s.
2. You have an nforce 650i chipset - this is a very poor quality product that does not overclock well at all without odd stability problems, and is even prone to premature failure with it.
The E6750 fortunately is a good chip, all you should need to do is up the FSB to 375 to get the CPU to 3Ghz, though due to the nforce board you may have to mess around with various different memory speeds to find a stable setting.
Awesome, I already did that and tested the system with Prime95 for 8 hours and there were no errors, so I'll assume it's all good and just deal with any problems when they arrive. I'd just like to know whether it was stupid of me to have put all three of those voltages up to 1.3V? (I did it because it was the middle voltage for each of the three manual settings, and it allowed me to set the FSB to 375MHz unlinked to the memory).
