Newbie here asking for a little help...
So i'm looking to build my Pc for rendering & 3d modeling using software like 3ds max, rhino grasshopper etc.
its not gonna be a supermachine but it has to be able to function as a workhorse computer.

So far i've decided:

INtel i7 860 over AMD phenom II (since it scored higher in benchmarks)
RAM (2 x 4gb)brands?????
GPU: I dont now if i should go for the NVIDIA FX1800 or for 2x NVIDIA FX 580
I have no idea about the cooling system ???????
And I dont know if a 500w power supply is gonna be enough ?????

All the help will be greatly appreciated...bare in mind im a newbie, i don't know anything but i'm willing to learn.

The Core i7 will be far superior to the Phenom II in rendering environments. You've made a reasonable choice there.
As far as RAM goes, I am not involved in 3D modelling so I don't know how much you'd need, but in all honesty I think with a 2000 dollar budget you would be better off going with an i7 920 and 6x2GB of RAM. You needn't bother especially about CPU cooling unless you want to overclock the CPU - not a bad plan, but for minimising errors you should keep the overclock relatively mild.
I'm afraid I'm relatively clueless on workstation graphics performance, but I would still always advise one more powerful card over two slower ones if the difference is sizeable, since dual graphics can still be potentially problematic.
As a baseline:

EX58-UD3R M/B: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128375
12GB XMS3 1600 RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145235
Noctua CPU cooler: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608014
Antec Three Hundred case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129066
Corsair 550W PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139004

1043/15

I am unsure what sort of storage you will require, but whatever you buy I would recommend the use of WD Black drives for high speed data, and WD Green drives for main storage.
From what I can see, the FX 1800 isn't likely to be hugely more powerful than the FX 580, but I am unsure how well multiple FX 580s will perform.
