Hello all,

I've got iPhone 16gb 3gs V3.1.2 and most recent baseband.
Its already registered on the optus network in Australia.

I've tried all of the above but I still cant seem to jailbreak the phone correctly.

First I used blackra1n, it did its stuff and seemed like it worked but when ever the phone is rebooted it goes into recovery mode (the iTunes logo and USB pic?)and will only bootup if I run blackra1n again.
While i'm in the phone i will let me install cydia and that seems to work fine.
I downloaded iPhonebrowser and ran it on my PC and it gives me a message along the bottom that iPhone 3.1.2 connected, not jailbroken (no afc2 service found).

I've tried restoring it using one of the custom ipsw files as mentioned in this thread (3gsactivatedjb.ipsw), it goes into recovery mode but iTunes sits on the message that it preparing the iphone for restoring then after a while it comes back with error message 1604.

Now i've tried using different USB ports and my second laptop but I still have the same problems :(

Has anybody else encountered this and if so did you overcome it?

Cheers all.

EDIT:

I've figured out that its a tethered jailbreak and what needs to be done.

Hey how did you fix your issue, I am running into the same issue. Itunes sits on restoring and then comes up with error. How exactly do you tether your device?
I thought tethering was simply connecting to your computer!

When you run blackrain rc3, it gives you the option afterwards of installing cydia, rock and blacksnow. Install cydia so you can patc h apps later on and then install blacksnow. Blacksnow is the unlocking tool for the iphone on 3.1.2.

However, make sure you dont accept any updates from itunes at a later date cause it will lock your phone again.

I didnt have an issue with tethering. Blackrain did everything for me. I have a 3GS on 3.1

the iPhone is a super sensitive device and most issues with itunes are communication errors. Use the usb cable and not a docking device. Try unplugging the cable and reconnecting it again. Try a different usb port. If this fails, try another usb cable. This solves most itunes issues.

If you continue to have tethering problems try starting afresh. restore to factory settings, update FW, then jailbreak and unlock.

Hope this helps.

sometimes after certain apps you need to "respring " the iphone or if the battery runs out I would lose all the "jailbroken apps" as like you stated the iphone states to plug the usb into itunes then once i do this it clears the iphone of all blainra1n and jailbroken apps :-(

First I used blackra1n, it did its stuff and seemed like it worked but when ever the phone is rebooted it goes into recovery mode (

how did you over come this?

Thanks for the replys. blackra1n seemed to work like a charm. my issue was mainly due to the usb ports, i was connecting through a hub and it did not work. connecting directly to the back of the pc did help.

so i was successfully able to jailbreak and unlock. Now I dont really care for the jailbreak portion and having to tether it on a reboot is somewhat annoying. My question is if i have JBd it and unlocked it now if i restore it through itunes, will the phone remain unlocked?

Is there another way to unlock the latest baseband that will remain intact if restored through itunes.

Alright guesswho, I was able to JB my 3Gs using BlackRa1n, now I want to try your method again. For some reason during a restore it gets stuck at the usb/itunes screen and then it just times out with the 1600 error( Something to do with USB as discussed in this forum). I can easily restore my phone without any issues so what is with the custom firmware that the itunes times out?

Hey Guys,

3.1.2 Jailbreak was released.

Go here to read about it.

I have already made custom ipsw files for you in the post, so you can download them if you would like.

Or, follow the guide in the wiki for you to create your own ipsw.

Have fun
