Firmware Upgrade & HELP W/ Unlocking 3GS with 4.3.5 Firmware!

I have 4.3.5 firmware on a 3GS phone and wanted to see the best way of unlocking this device without having to tether the device to a computer every time I restart.

Redsnow and absinth or greenpoison seem the best options from what I have read, but I never experience and not my hunches.

A- Should I upgrade firmware on the 3GS (5.0 or 5.1) then flash device?
B- Whats the best program to use and what version of that program?
