IMEI issue with Orange

Hi folks - I wonder if you can help me. I have query with an Iphone 3gs.

I recently bought one of these from a fellow member on the MKIV Supra.net car forum. He was selling an as new one as he had lost the phone, reported it lost, had a replacement supplied by the insurance company and subsequently found it again. He had contacted Apple and the insurance company to tell them but they were not interested and subsequently, the IMEI is still blocked via Orange.

I bought the phone off him as I usually live on the Greek island of Kos and I was told that the phone (providing it was inlocked from the network and therefore able to accept a greek SIM card) should work out there.

I say usually live in Greece as I am currently back in the UK due to being diagnosed with esophegal cancer and I have come back home for treatment.

After speaking to friends last night (as they unlocked and jailbroke the phone) they said that if he (the seller) had talked to Orange and told them that he had found the phone again and that he had told the insurers too then they may have then unblocked the IMEI to get it working again. Do you think this is true and if it is possible? Alternatively, is there an alternative you can suggest or am I stuck with this until I get back to Greece and see if it works there?

Sorry for the long diatribe but I wanted to explain the situation rather than you think I was some spotty chav who was trying to get a stolen phone unblocked.
