First off, I am hard on my phones, dropped my last samsung phone a few times on cement and pavement. I have been looking at the Otterbox Defender and Griffin Survivor for the iPhone 4. Any suggestions for a good case?

The Otterbox seems like a good option, if you drop your phone often. The Otterbox is built strong to give you maximum protection. Most Otterbox cases also have padding on the interior. This allows for more shock absorption. The Otterbox will give you great defense against unsuspected damages.
