iPhone Picture dilemma

I restored my iPhone from my previous iTunes sync because I received a replacement iphone due to issues.

My pictures are not there. Considering I have my contacts and other various bits.

iTunes says I currently have 1.5gb of photos on the phone which is incorrect.

Is there anyway to get these photos back?

Does itunes store the photos on the hard drive?
