My daughters iphone 3 is stuck in recovery mode. Everytime it gets half way through restoring it says problem occured. I dont know how it got like this. Any suggestions?

Try using the program tiny umbrella
Tiny Umbrella
connect the iPhone , run the program and click on exit recovery mode

let me know what happens
