What DVD/VCR players support Subtitles?

I have been to several electronic stores best buy, hhgreg and their staff cannot tell me what player will support subtitles. I originally purchased a Toshiba and couldn't make the subtitles work so I called Toshiba with model 3 and was told it won't do subtitles. I have several VHS tapes with subtitles and I want to continue to enjoy them. Help me identify a VCR/DVD player that will work for me. Thanks.
