Android A13 Tablet; new screen doesn't work???

Hiya, my son dropped his android tablet a13 and cracked the screen but still had about 80% of the screen working. I brought a new screen from ebay which I have fitted but it doesnt work...its the right size screen and right ribbon size and the ribbon even looks the same. Ocassionly for a few seconds I am able to touch the screen and the screen unlock icon flashes but then I can not do anything more that that so Im puzzled...any ideas??? Do I need to format the screen??? The only buttons I can press are the external buttons being power, volume up/down and return button. There is a reset button on the board too.
