This question has probably been asked many times but I can't find a "best answer" here. I have a whole lot of blurays and dvds that I want to put on a large network hard drive and stream the movies. Most are not encrypted although some are. I've heard all this talk about creating ISOs with them but it seems to be a waste of space and I don't know that media players like the Roku, WD TV, etc. will see these files and play them.

Now there are differences between bluray and the dvds. I can create folders and copy the contents of each disc into the folder but not sure that is optimal. In addition, some blurays have a few different mts files that are different movies, e.g. 2-3 titles in DVD9 format on one disc. So as you can see, this is complicated.

Priority is to maintain the quality of the video. How have you guys set up your media streaming from a hard drive in the easiest most efficient format?

I have a 2tb external on my pc through usb and stream with my ps3.i added my video folder (on external) to windows media player
Most my files are divx, xvid or mp4.most are very watchable and playback is fine (apart from an odd few that trigger cinivia)

I also have a 650gb external usb drive that i connect to my dvd player thats play divx only.

Most media players should support divx,xvid,mp4 some will support mkv others wont.Rip to what ever format yours support.

Dvdfab will rip the movies fine to avi.

custom built gaming pc from early 2010,ps2 with 15 games all original,ps3 500gbs with 5 games all original, yamaha amp and 5.1channel surround sound speakers,46inch sony lcd smart tv.

Thanks. Unfortunately Sony is pitifully slow with updating the PS3 to do anything with video streaming, which it appears it doesn't want users to do. I wanted to do as little reencoding as possible which is rather irritating considering that each time you switch video containers it seems that you need to reencode rather than just remux. Wasn't sure whether there was a universally best format to use that should play well on most players.
