I've collected a lot of old cartoons on various DVD's and thought to use something like TMPGEnc to rip and separate each into individual .divx files, which I could re-order and put on new DVD's that would not only take up less space, but still have the menu ability, to be played on a divx compatible player.
Got a WD media player and 1.5T drive with a lot of my DVD's put on it as a Christmas gift, and it worked fine, and I realized I could put the individual .divx cartoons on the drive in any order I wanted (directories/subdirectories on the HDD), and skip making new DVD's.
Well I put a few .divx files on the HDD, and they wouldn't show up; the media player didn't recognize them. On not much more than the phrase "container format," I connected the HDD to my computer, and changed the .divx extension to .avi which the docs said the player would accept.
They showed up and played fine.
I'm just wondering what kind of trouble I could get into if I do this with this and other extensions (.mp4, .mkv). Sure, I could just get videos with other extensions, change them to .avi and see what happens, but even if they play just fine--as the changed .divx files do--is there anything else I'm overlooking?
Just curious as to why this worked, and perhaps a bit cautious about continuing, eh?

The trouble is not the extension it is the format. The error msg is trying to convey that to you.

My apologies. Guess I wasn't clear. I pull one cartoon out of a DVD and it gets named cartoon1.divx. Copying this to the media player and it does not show up. Just changing the extension so the name is now cartoon1.avi, and the player sees the file and plays it fine. Downloaded file coaster.mp4 and also not even found. Just changing extension so name is now coaster.avi, and the player lists it and plays it just fine.

Question is will there be any trouble if I have to re-format these files?
