Hello,

I am trying to back up all of my tv seasons from dvd and store them on my external hard drive. When I've downloaded from a torrent site, the episodes come DVDrip and are 175mb and are crystal clear quality. When I try to do the same, I have grainy quality.

How to these people who upload these episodes on those sites make these episodes so perfect?

I've used many programs such as Handbrake and auto gk.

My main goal is to have the 22-30 minute episodes between 175mb-200mb.

Thanks,

Craig

I don't know, I've seen plenty of 175MB or 350MB encodes which look fairly average, or like crap.

If the source video is grainy the encode will be grainy unless you use a filter to try to remove it. AutoGK runs a light noise filter when encoding DVDs.
Unless you're comparing encodes taken from the same DVD, you're not comparing apples with apples as no two videos will compress to the same file size and also the same quality.
Reducing the resolution a bit will help compress video using smaller file sizes without sacrificing too much quality.

Personally I don't worry about file sizes as hard drives are reasonably cheap these days. I encode to a specific quality and let the file sizes be whatever they need to be. Depending on the quality of the source video some of my 22-30 minute encodes (I usually use 656x368 for SD Xvid/AVI 16:9 encodes and often with 720p video as the source) come in well under 175MB. Some are much larger.
