Help with AVI file conversion

I have a dvd in AVI format on my hard drive. Is it possible to convert the AVI to VideoTS
and AudioTS files before using dvdShrink and imgburn. If so, what software do I need to install? I've searched these forums and the guides but can't find a straight answer. I don't want to burn the AVI file to a disc and then have it not work in my DVD player. Any and all help would be appreciated!
