Poor quality when converting MTS files from my new Canon

I got a Canon HF M50 to replace my HF200 (from 2009).

But for some reason, when I try and convert those MTS files to say, MP4, the quality is terrible (very pixelated, sometimes completely unwatchable). I never had that issue with my old MTS files.

I normally use Freemake, I've also tried atube catcher and DVDFab's video conversion feature and neither are as good as what I was getting.

With freemake, sometimes I have success by first converting it to an HD quality AVI file first (then to a smaller MP4). But not always.

Any suggestions? I imagine that it's due to a newer MTS format that the freewares haven't caught up to yet?
