Very basic question here, but my efforts with search seem to be limited by my lack of vocabulary when it comes to video work and have thus been fruitless:

I have a number of 1080p videos that I wish to play on an old Pentium 4 laptop (I volunteer for an animal rescue group and this is the system we set up for display at adoption events). Playback is unacceptably choppy with MPC and VLC. I believe the proper course is to re-encode at a lower resolution - which is probably just as well since native res on this machine is a measly 1024x768.

What options should I use to help lighten the load on the processor? These are HD videos of avian flight so the images are complex with significant movement. Visual quality is much more important than file size, but of course they have to play smoothly. Is bitrate all that matters when it comes to CPU loading (ie should I test with a representative sample to find the highest bitrate my machine can play and encode to that)? Does codec choice make a significant difference (is xvid lighter on playback than H264)? Or is resolution/number of pixels king (am I better off with higher bitrate at 800x600 and letting my video player scale it during playback)?

Thanks to anyone willing to altruistically share their insight with a naif!
