A friend went to a shop and had some VHS tapes converted to DVD, He then transferred the DVD files to his laptop. When he tries to watch the VTS files, they freeze and pixellate. He's running windows 7 and is using windows media player. He has no trouble playing .avi files. I copied his VTS files to my computer. He has 4 VTS files consisting of 4 or 5 different scenes in each. They're each about 1 GB. They run fine for me. My plan was to convert the VTS files to .avi, then chop them up into smaller files. Each scene would be a separate .avi. So I used Format Factory to convert them. The resulting size is 355 MB. However, when I play the resulting .avi, they freeze and pixellate. Just like the VTS files on my friend's laptop. Is this Format Factory's fault? It's a free to use converter.
