Does bdxl discs require special burning apps?

Just got a LG "WH14NS40" blu-ray drive that boasts that it can read/write BDXL and M Discs. The BDXL discs cost more than the optical drive.
But, my question is: Will the BDXL discs require a special software to burn the triple and quadruple layer discs? (Who knows, the discs may be affordable one day.)
