According to Sony the S5100 upscale DVDs, TV shows and sports to 3D and easily turns 2D films and TV into virtual 3D viewing at the press of a button. A really good and technically applicable reason for buying!
Can't go wrong with SonyBD Players. Another good choice is Panasonic, but is a bit more expensive. That Sony one I listed would be perfect, pretty cheap for a Blu-ray player, and it will play all formats, except for (flv, iso) I think, but then again very few, if not any, Blu-ray players play those 2 formats. But mkv, mp4, avi, you name it, this one will play it flawlessly.
I have an older version of Sony's midrange Blu-ray player, and I don't see myself upgrading for many years.
The only downside, is that Sony didn't include 3D on it's midrange model this year like it did before.
Check out these two Panasonic's if you really want 3D:
personally i'd be checking out philips and what blu ray players they have.im using a philips sterio from 92 for sound on my computer and a philips dvd player from 2007 in my bedroom for movies.
