I heard its not as simple as just buying a replacement and that you need to consider keys etc?

This is a friends XBOX (its the newer slimline type). DVD drive was working ok but not tray is jammed out. Might be fixable - I dont know.

If I have to get a replacement for them, do I need the same make and do I need to worry about keys etc?

Yes. The keyof the drive has to match the key of the console.

Since your broken drive is a mechanical issue, that means the PCB board still works. The PCB has the key on it, so remove that PCB and put it in the replacement drive.

Now you have a working drive and matching keys.
