So I purchased a system for fairly cheap. it died pretty fast.. E74. the odd thing is if i boot the system without the AV cable in, nothing happens at all other than the green light turning on. i have tried other AV cables, though the same thing happened as the first cable. plus both cables work with other xboxes. how shall i deal with this xbox?

You either need to do the x-clamp fix (only a temporary solution), reflow it or get it reballed if you really wanna spend some money to fix it. You could also get a heat gun and reflow it yourself (I believe it's a reflow when you do it yourself? hopefully someone can correct me on that?) Anyways check out woolys heat gun method here: link. I did it with a couple 360s that had rrod.

Hope that helps and I'm sure some others here can help out if I didn't say it just right.

What went wrong with this box? I have fix others by reflowing but I knew what the issue was. This seems.. Flawed.

Could be a bad connection with the av port. I know that when you don't push it in all the way it will do that. I'm only assuming but, it seems like that is what's wrong. Not sure how you can fix that but I'd take a look at the av port.

it is in nice and firm. though do you think it is worth trying HDMI? i dont personally own a HDMI device, but it could be interesting. Why does it not cause the 4 RLOD when the AV cable is out?

If it has HDMI I would try it. If it works that probably means there's a bad pin/connection inside the port, not your cables. As for the second part maybe thats the answer to your problem. If it's not flashing when it's out that means it must think the cable is connected. I don't know for sure I'm only guessing and trying to figure this out too. It is interesting.

Have you tried turning it on first and then hooking it up to the tv?

You dont get the 4 red rings when no AV cable is connected on HDMI models, my guess is that it will still be RROD with HDMI.

E74 happens when some of the points on the gpu lose continuity with the hana/ana chip. Sometimes the xbox will work with a different outputs but to fix it completely you'll need to reflow the gpu. Use kester 951 no clean flux, it makes a world of difference. Just search ebay for "kester 951".
