just bought an xbox from a private seller for £5 with RROD, however after getting it home and plugging in, it would appear no power is going to the console, the fans start up breifly and then nothing just 3 red lights, i have removed xclamps but still none the wiser, ive had a look around but found no difinitive answer for this problem, can anyone help? or was it a waste of a fiver lol

If the drive is still good it definitely wasn't a waste of a fiver (and if you got the PSU and/or any more stuff with it, it was a damn sweet deal). I wouldn't try to fix the RROD though (by the way, you describe the normal symptomes of a RROD), because they tend to reappear. I'd try getting a box with the same drive brand and a defective drive and simply flash the drive from the RROD console with the firmware from the defective drive (or flash the key and LT).
