Hi all,

I've just bought a faulty slim 320gb from an online second hand store for £50. They stated that it wouldnt connect via av or hdmi. I thought perhaps I could just reset it by holding down the power button. Well the fault is completely different, it switches on for about 5 seconds then shuts down with no standy light. The eject button still beeps and when the power button is pressed again the standby light will appear. I have tried a different psu with no joy and also started it without the drive and hdd connected incase its them, still no joy. Any ideas or should I just sell as spares on ebay?

Thanks to all

well you can still salvage it.... if you have a flasher from what i can see its a bricked ps3... few months ago i bought slim ps3 160gb not only it was stuck in 3.56v1.... the hdd was formatted... and was also in factory mode.... when i 1st got it after powering it on all i got is around 10secs of power then several beeps and shutdown to blinking red light fixing it was no problem i bought it for like 30 bucks or so and gave it to a friend of mine he always wanted a ps3.... it had no controllers so he had to buy one..... anyway if you have a flasher and if the ps3 not too damaged you can still fix it ^__^ other wise sell it for parts

BTW if you think the ps3 is 3.55 or lower you can solder the tristate(PA0 pad) to GND(ground)anywhere to the mother board this will make the ps3 permanently powered on then just use factory mode dongle to enter it and it will reflash the ps3 into a brand new firm that hopefully fixes the brick :D

heh you quoted my non edited post lol

anyway i posted a list of things you need in another thread so ill quote it here

Quote:
few steps

1) get a flasher... E3 flasher(dont get the limited edition its not worth it) it should work... its easy to install cost around 60-80 bucks

2) get microSD card (SDHC gave me trouble and my nor dumps were partial and corrupted) so get a non SDHC card they are usually under 2gb in size cost around 10 bucks i think

3) a downgrade dongle this one is a MUST its needed to finish the process of the downgrade cost can be varied from 15 to 30 bucks

4) a usb flash any size will do as long as its formatted in FAT32 you probably have one :3 i mean who doesnt right :D

5) hex editor to verify the dump any will do i use HXD its free

6) tools needed to work on the dump can be found here >>> link

guide to downgrade can be found here >>> link

Just one more question. Before I purchase one do you really think it is this? I just read on another forum you can tell that its the power supply if when you power up, and it shuts down that the red standby light disappears. Thats exactly what happens, although I took my power supply out of my 120gb slim and tried it in the 320gb and it was the same.

nope! lol.... ps3 bricks are not exact science.... you should check what colours it actually showing

YLOD - Yellow Led of Death(Flashes Green Yellow then Red) hardware problem BUT you can check with PA0(tristate) to GND(ground) by soldering if the LED will flash in GLOD mode then its a flash based problem so try that before anything :3

RLOD - Flashing Red Led of Death(flash based problem fixing bricks like this is 50/50 chance but most of the time you can fix it if the nor is not corrupted)

GLOD - Flashing Green Led of Death (this one is not a bad thing really usually when you power a ps3 down the green will flash)some times it will also beep few times when doing this lol silly PS3 :D

BTW there's also a diag mode that you can run on a ps3 just enter fan mode after that it will power down then just press eject and press few times power sometimes u have to hold eject and press power after that the ps3 LED will flash if the first sequence is all red blinking then every thing is all right..... if it will flash something like green red green red then its probably a brick..... again i must insist its a 50/50 chance.... the error codes don't really tell whats broken but probably tell whats broken in the boot order...

Hi Cyprien,

Thanks for all the responses. I have tried the fan test and that did work. After it shuts down there are no lights on. I have to remove the power cord and plug back in then I get the standby light back on. I've also tried what you said about holding down the eject button but no leds flash, no lights. Cheers

during fan test after its done the ps3 is still on the LEDs will not flash or anything like that...... they will flash(yellow for 1 sec then red 4 times or green 4 times) only if you do the diagnose mode press eject then press power(you will have to be in the fan test) im not sure how much presses you will have to do but you will know when its there once you see yellow LED

so what does your PS3 do when you power it on....

beep > solid green > few beeps > green flashing > red flashing > ps3 turns off > red still flashing

or

beep > solid green > few beeps > green flashing > yellow flashing > red flashing > ps3 turns off > red still flashing

or

beep > solid green > few beeps > green flashing > ps3 turns off > solid red

It's a short circuit on the 12v line, means the motherboard is screwed. Looks like this:

If you are good at soldering and have the needed parts you may be able to fix it, but it might take forever to find the actual short circuit.

Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

Just an update. I believe it is the blu-ray drive. I have taken out the blu-ray drive and now the ps3 stays on, although no picture and can't get into safe mode. Any ideas guys?

And that is called the Green Light of death, try putting a Penny over the GPU and see if that helps.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Yes that is exactly what I did. Have placed 4 pennys on the gpu and hey presto it works. Could this be dangerous having metal coins in there? So I guess this is due to the fact the thermal paste has disappeared and the coins are applying pressure?
