Okay. just last week my ps3 (classic 60 that has a 750 in it now) Yellow lighted on me.
Sending it back to sony, I have a feeling im gonna lose all of my stuff. not worried. however, I AM worried about the fate of my game saves. what id LIKE to do, is hook my HDD up to an external enclosure and pull them all off. Can i do that? or should i just leave it in there and theyll get it all sorted out?
another reason i want to get them off is because i have my friends ps3, and i wanna further my games whilst my console is repaired. is that possible? so far im not seeing anything, but i may be missing a step. and the ps3 sure doesnt see it.
Yeah you will have to do a backup of your system. This should save all your game saves I believe, will require at least 20gb of free space on an external hdd.
Real question is are you on firmware 4.0 or cfw 3.55?
Note that all systems returned to $ony for repairs are updated to the latest version! So if you are on 3.55 they will update it to 4.0 even without your consent!
Now if you are on 4.0 and only wish to copy your saved game data, nothing else. $ony were helpful enough to allow save gamme data to be copied to a usb drive or stick. With this you can then log onto your friend's PS3 with your account, not his, and then copy to save game to that PS3 and continue playing. Not tried this myself but most likely does work. And when you get your PS3 can copy the new saves back to it.
You cannot do this with the backup utility though.
just remember is you are on 3.55 and send it to $ony they WILL UPDATE TO 4.0

you didnt read what i wrote. thanks.
here, ill bold it for you. I WANT TO PULL MY GAMESAVES OFF THE HDD TO MY BROKEN PS3. HOW DO I DO THAT. make sense now?
Ah yes of course, cant get saves off if it aint loading :D
No, dont think there is any way to get them off. How much you going to be paying $ony?!
Cos if they demand money, and you are in the USA you can try complaining that you agreed to their new ToS so that means you are leasing the PS3 hardware from them and as such they are responsible for replacing it if it breaks :P But then this is an old phat console so they'll say it's out of warranty, but then you can say the contract was renewed when you installed the latest firmware on it.
Anyway, most likely your PS3 overheated, should be able to fix with the heat gun fix instead of paying $ony more of your money!
