I just purchased a slim 160 Gb PS3 and want to install a larger internal HDD. I know it has to be a 2.5" SATA @5400 RPM but what about formatting?

After install does the PS3 format the HDD to Fat32?

Are HDD's pre-formatted or does that occur after installation?

When you install a new hdd into a ps3 you are asked to reinstall the firmware. This is because some of the firmware files are stored on the hdd.

So you need to download the firmware your ps3 currently is on and copy it to a usb stick, then after turning on the ps3 you can format the hdd to work with your ps3.

Note that once formatted, you can swap hdds without having to format again. But you cannot place a hdd formatted from one ps3 into another ps3.
