YLOD fix, how long should it last

Hi there, I'll keep it short.
40gb phat, YLOD, stripped, heat gun fix done & new paste. 2 weeks ago.
Random shutdown last night. No warning, no yellow light, restarted, working fine.
Is this a precursor to another YLOD?
How long should the fix last on average?

IF you fix the cooling issues that caused the YLOD in the first place, there is no reason that it should happen again any time soon...I've got over 18 months since my system was having issues.
If you ignore the causes of YLOD, you can get 2-6 weeks...maybe 3 months if you are lucky.
This is why I created my fan controllers. You can build one yourself or you can get a plug-n-play version online by clicking one of the flags at the top of my website, www.killerbug.net

Cool, thanks for the reply.
My PS3 has indeed YLOD'ed for a second time.
Now, i know you're selling these things, so i'll try not to be too skeptical of any answer.
If i fix again, and use one of your fan controllers, will the fact that i have already fixed once be detrimental ?
I admit, i only used cheap thermal paste on the 1st fix, but i'll get some arctic silver for a second.

First rule of thermal club, dont be cheap with thermal paste. Yes the good stuff does sound, or rather is a lot more expensive than the cheaper stuff, but they are expensive for a reason, they are better. This isnt a pair of trainers you are buying where most of the money goes to the branding badge.
So if you just placed your PS3 back where it usually is and did not do anything to improve the ventilation around it, then yeah, combined with the cheap paste it will ylod pretty quickly.
Ideally you do not want to reflow your boards several times, if you do you end up burning the flux away and the solder will crack faster. This can be fixed by adding more flux.
Really you want to make sure you have plenty of space around your PS3, it;s an expensive device and for the sake of cleaning up the area or making space for it, do you really want to lost a couple hunderd dollars when it dies completely?
Note that having the PS3 horizontal rather than vertical spread the heat making the PS3 run cooler.
So get some arctic/antec silver next time or better, dont put too much on though, too thick and the heat wont transfer fast enough. And make space for the PS3, haivng it stuck in the back of a shelf is not good for it, and make sure there is a few inches around it if you put it vertically.

I don't blame you for being skeptical...I could tell you that I have only lost money on them and that I only make them to hurt sony...but again, you could be skeptical...but I also offer plans to make one yourself, without paying me a cent...and I doubt you can be skeptical about that.
