are you certain you have realtek on your motherboard as it can be a different manufacturer of sound chip?

it's not what you think...

Realtek makes 2 differrent sound cards for computers the good and the bad as we call them.

1. is just regular realtek there drivers are in windows 8 no issues there

2. is a sound card called AC97 it's a realtek sound card with a nasty driver that is only functional in windows vista windows 7 and windows xp there hasn't been a update for windows 8 as of yet because the users are few and far in-between

Update there might be a solution....

users are reporting that if you install the 64 bit version of windows 8 that the realtek driver for windows 7 is functional in windows 8 but the only sound they have gotten out of it was from iTunes

ac97 is an old sound card.you might just have to go out and buy a compatible sound card for win8.one thing puzzles me tho, wont windows install its own high definition sound driver and if so how does that work?

the machine i have got works well with any windows
as its a built in sound card with the bundle I have bought
no need for me 2 rush out an buy a new sound card - as the sound is working fine just now
it just happens occasionally; when it dose it's annoying.
i am not the only with a problem with windows 8 and sound as there is no fix
i have the latest drivers for it
personally just think there is a problem with windows 8 itself
may just go back to windows 7

I had issues with the driver Windows 8 installed for the Realtek (ALC662) on my motherboard I had problems with both the microphone and speakers being about half the level they should. I tried updating with a driver from Realtek's website which gave me the same results.

The 2+ year old Windows 7 driver finally fixed the problem.

Not sure why you would say that. You had a driver issue in a brand new version of Windows. If you want to avoid that sort of thing you should always wait for Service Pack 1. That's not specific to Windows 8 or sound. That's all versions of Windows and drivers.

When Windows thinks it's getting a message from the hardware when it hasn't, the exact problem you mentioned in your first post, in my experience it's a driver problem at least 90% of the time.

u2r1, if it works in win7 & below but not win8 then is a driver problem with win8. all devices in windows whether win8, win7 or whatever needs drivers for that device to work. what is the make & model# of the computer or motherboard to see what you have & if compatible to win8?
