Every time I attempt to start windows defender I get an error message 0x80073b01. Up to 5 days ago it was working fine. Any advice

try system restore to before the problem.

Done that but for some reason the only date for the restore point is today, and I can't find a way of creating a restore point say for 1 month ago????

should give you option for more restore points below "todays restore point".

No it does not give an option for this. I go in to system restore, then choose a different restore point, then in the table the only restore points are 09/05/13 and 11/05/13. How do I restore to a point 3-4 months ago????

if no more restore points then can't go back 3-4 months. see if windows defender is in the add/remove programs & download windows defender from microsoft. what other anti-virus\spy-malware programs are you using?
