I've a few questions for the gurus in cd-r/w and dvd-r/w burning, but before I get started, let me say right from the start that I understand that there is no current solution for those of us who would love to burn DVD's (Videos and games) in RAW mode, thereby eliminating some of our copy-protection woes. Now, for most problems, we've figured out workarounds, but I've a proposition that is predicated on first getting the answers to a couple of questions.
First question. In CD-RW drives, do RAW mode and DAO/SAO require different controller chips within the drive, or is it merely a matter of having a chipset that is programmed via firmware to enable raw mode writing ala plextor?
If they do require 2 different chipsets, then I suppose I'm done. But if not...
What would it take to dump the firmware of a popular dvd-rw drive and add some programming similar to the CD-rw's of old, and then reinstall the edited firmware, thus enabling RAW mode reading and writing on our favorite drive. (I'm a big fan of Lite-On, myself, and they seem to be popular.)
Ok, in summation: Was RAW mode cd writing a function of drive software? Are DVD-RW's crippled out of RAW writing, or is it a function of hardware that they simply don't have? How might I get ahold of some firmware source code to start fiddling?
