New to the forum so I hope I don't tred on any toes.
I would like to ask about an issue I've had for some time. When I burn a DVD Dual layer movie I have very mixed results. For months I will have no problems with the dvd burning and playback on any of my players at home, then for some reason everything goes bad. Nero reports the burn was succesful but when I play the dvd I have problems. Movie will stutter, stop, play etc. This happens more often with TV Series burns such as Simpsons. Nothing changes on my PC setup. Most of the time I can not play the dvd on any device (playstation and two sony dvd players), some times It will work on one dvd player but not on any other. I know the original rip is good because I can play the content from my hard drive fine and stream it through my media server with the play station 3. The problem is with the burning process but I'm not sure what. I'm using Memorex DVD+RDL.

Memorex DVD+R DL are all 8X from Ritek, which means that they are manufactured using the inverse stack method that produces better yields, lower costs, and better quality (all else being equal). The drawback is that not all DVD+R DL drives can handle inverse stack discs during recording. I suspect that your problem is that your drives do not support IS production even though Asus, Lite-on, Ritek, and CMC are all physically close to each other in Taiwan. If your discs have been recorded at 8X, try 4X or 2.4X to see if you get better results. Slower speeds give the laser lens more time to refocus over the layer break; but if your discs are stuttering before you get to the break, it sounds as though there is a firmware incompatibility with your drive and the Memorex discs.
Try slowing down your recording speed first. If that doesn't work, look for a firmware upgrade for your drives. If there is no update, try Verbatim DVD+R DL to see if you get better results.
I have tried burning at 4X with same results. I kind of suspected it might be the media. It is cheap (about a buck a disk). I buy it at frys. Verbatim is my media of choice for standard DVD burning but to expensive for DL. I guess I have to bite it and spend the extra money.
The media are probably not at fault, and accusing them of poor quality is contrary to test data and test results. Memorex/Ritek DVD+R DL are very good discs; but as I stated before, they are 8X IS production. Ritek produces more DL than Verbatim; but Verbatim remains 2P production and the main DL disc to which every drive manufacturer tunes his firmware. Too few drives work with IS produced discs, and that--not disc quality--is the far more likely problem. The fact that they are far less expensive than Verbatim is due to: 1) less expensive IS production costs (no polymer stamper is thrown away); 2) higher rates of production that also reduce costs; 3) aggressive pricing by Memorex in order to obtain market share.
That would mean a Porsche trying to pull stumps from a field is a piece of junk too? Interesting. And a drive that won't play a Blu-ray disc is also garbage.
In the thread above you condemn Memorex and acknowledge that Ritek are just OK. They are the same. Is there any logic to any of these arguments?
