When I back up my DVD's the volume is considerably lower than the original.

Any sugestions or is it just something I live with?

I don't know why the audio would change.
If it's a straight copy then nothing should change.
If it's the case that the video has been 'shrinked' to fit a DVD-5, then it's likely that if there was DTS audio, it wasn't included in the backup (DVD Shrink defaults to the AC3 tracks, leaving the DTS out) - but the audio tracks are not changed in the process - only the video is transcoded.

If this always been happening to you:
My first guess is that you need to upgrade your OS (Operation System) like from Home Edition to a higer Edition since you are at need of Audio Codecs.

If this been happenning to you lately:
Your audio codecs maybe are corrupted by other programs you been download lately.
1.- A simple System Restore will correct this issue....or...
2.- Re-run "Application and Drive Recovery DVD" disk once again to correct falls.

It's the same codec being used during playback of the original and the copy.
